Aurora - Oct.29, 2003
Clouds dominated the sky at my favorite location for shooting the northern lights(top image) but you could see them peaking below the clouds.  Our chances were not looking good so we decided to take a short drive ending up on a rural highway, and were rewarded with a nice big hole in the clouds and a spectacular display(bottom image).

This display was similar to the
display of 10/21/01. These images were taken between 2:00-3:30am CST from north of Des Moines, IA, using a 28mm lens at f/2.5, exposed for approx.15-20 secs on Fuji Provia 400F(pushed one stop).  Original transparencies were scanned at 2700 dpi and processed in Photoshop to match originals on calibrated monitor. These photos really do not do justice to we saw last evening including the ghost-like pulsations directly overhead.  Note: I've noticed Provia has a tendency towards yellow in the green aurora spectrum.
