I became "hooked" on aurora photography during a fishing trip to NW Ontario, Canada in June of 2000. On one warm evening, my brother Greg and I were outside on the deck of the cabin we rented which overlooked the lake and had a perfect view of the northern horizon. I had taken a few sunset photos earlier so all my equipment was set-up and ready to go. As we stood there talking about how to fish the lake the next day and watching twilight fade, I notice some pearly white strands above the northern horizon...ah!...the elusive and mysterious noctilucent clouds, which I had hoped I would be fortunate to get a glimpse of on the trip. I was elated! After watching and taking pictures of the NLC for an hour, the beautiful northern lights followed and showed their glory to us for 2 hours (first thumbnail below), a light show my brother and I will never forget. Shooting the aurora has now become an obsession although my opportunities are fairly rare living in Iowa. The Autumn of 2001 though gave me 3 very good auroral displays, the best I have ever seen here in Iowa. Since the Canada trip, I've been very fortunate to have been able to witness and photograph the aurora numerous times, but I must add you need alot of patience and persistence. I hope you enjoy the images as much as I enjoyed taking them. Each thumbnail is the link to the series of photos for that particular aurora, mouse over the thumbnail for the details. |
