"Sundogs & Sun pillar on Winter Solstice 2000"
Sundogs, or the scientific name "parhelia", sometimes make it appear as though there are 3 suns in the sky due to the reflection of sunlight through ice crystals in the atmosphere.  In the bottom 2 photos you can also see the full 22 degree halo around the sun.  These 3 photos were taken on Dec. 21, 2000 from Des Moines, Iowa.  Mouse over on the bottom image will reveal the sunset photo where you can plainly see the sun pillar at sunset.  For more info on this phenomena, visit the Atmospheric Optics website.
