Halo, pillar & sun dogs - January 27, 2004

A beautiful halo surrounds the sun and sun dogs fire at 22° on each side, pillar extending upwards. Atmospheric conditions were perfect for this rare optical illusion- clear skies, below zero temperatures and ice crystals floating in the atmosphere from the previous day's snowfall. As the sun rose higher, the sun dogs were as almost as bright as the sun itself. See the Atmospheric Optics website for more.
